Julie London

JulieJulie London (nee Peck, September 26, 1926 - October 18, 2000) is an American actor and singer. Her career spans over 40 years. London was a torch performer well-known for her soft, pleasant vocals and her languid contralto voice, recorded more than thirty albums of pop and jazz classics between 1955-1969. The track she recorded "Cry Me a River" the track she released on her debut album, was admitted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001. London was also nominated in 1974 for the Golden Globe Award for her character as Dixie McCall, a nurse in the show Emergency! London was born in Santa Rosa to vaudevillian parents. Her first professional job was as an actress when she was an elevator operator in downtown Los Angeles. London's career as an actor lasted 35 years. in the film industry in 1944 which included roles for female leads in a variety of westerns. She also starred alongside Rock Hudson in The Fat Man (1951) and with Robert Taylor and John Cassavetes in Saddle the Wind (1958) as well as together with Gary Cooper in Man of the West (1958) and with Robert Mitchum in The Wonderful Country (1959). In the mid-50s she signed a recording contract with Liberty Records. This was the beginning of her professional music career. The album she released was her last album of studio recordings in 1969, but continued to have success as the female lead role of nurse Dixie McCall in the television show Emergency! (1972-1979) during which she was co-starring with Bobby Troup. Jack Webb, her ex-husband was the producer of the show.
